Angels Give Managerial Reins to Ron Washington
Former Rangers Skipper Returns to Dugout
Los Angeles, Calif.
The Los Angeles Angels have appointed Ron Washington as their new manager, the team announced Wednesday. Washington, 69, brings a wealth of experience to the Angels, having previously managed the Texas Rangers from 2007 to 2014.
During his tenure with the Rangers, Washington led the team to two American League West division titles and two World Series appearances. He also guided the Rangers to a 60-102 record in 2014, the worst in the franchise's history.
Washington's appointment comes after the Angels fired Brad Ausmus following a disappointing 72-90 season. Ausmus, who was hired in October 2018, compiled a 160-211 record in three seasons with the Angels.
Washington is a former infielder who played 18 seasons in the majors. He was a two-time All-Star and won two Gold Glove Awards. After retiring as a player, Washington managed in the minors before joining the Rangers' coaching staff in 2002.
The Angels are hoping that Washington can help them return to contention in the AL West. The Angels have not won a division title since 2014 and have not reached the playoffs since 2014.
