Norway Says Israel May Have Broken International Law in Gaza Bombardment
A day after the International Criminal Court's (ICC) prosecutor requested an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Norway's Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said that Norway believes Israel may have broken international law in its bombardment of Gaza. The bombardment has leveled neighborhoods and killed thousands.
Eide's statement comes as Norway is coming out of several years of a Netanyahu-led government in Israel, which was characterized by a sense of deep immobility with regard to the peace process.
The ICC prosecutor's request for an arrest warrant is a significant development in the international community's efforts to hold Israel accountable for its actions in Gaza. If the ICC issues an arrest warrant, it would be the first time that a sitting head of state has been charged with war crimes by the court.
